About the Area

      Guadalhorce Valley Region

It is a fact that an increasing number of Europeans are choosing Andalusia as either a place of residence or holiday home.

Until recently, it was the Costa del Sol which was the favoured destination. The tour operators brought all the tourists to the coastal strip between Nerja and Estepona, which is where all the hotels were situated. Only the adventurous ventured inland beyond Mijas, since a lack of infrastructures meant a journey of 30km could take several hours. However, the last 15 years have witnessed a dramatic change in communications and access. The well-guarded secret of the spectacular Guadalhorce valley, Alora, Alhaurin el Grande, Coín and Cartama are now within 30 minutes drive from Málaga and its airport and 30 minutes from the beaches of Fuengirola or Torremolinos. The towns of Monda and Guaro are respectively 15 and 20 minutes from Marbella.

Consequently, many more people are discovering both the beauty and the quality of life to be found in the Andalusian countryside. The climate is simply superlative: even during the coldest months, December to February, the temperature seldom falls below 15º C. In July and August it may reach 40º C but the cool summer breeze of the valley ensures that it never becomes oppressively hot. Furthermore, the southern hills separating the valley from the coast not only protect the area from the hot Sahara winds but also prevent a high level of humidity, rarely exceeding 70%. In addition, due to the many rivers and underground resources, the area never experiences shortages of water.

The type of properties available in the area vary from modest fincas (farms) in need of repair, to mansion houses with thousands of m2, pueblo (town) houses to be restored and bright new apartments. Naturally there are also plots of building land which, in this area, can be anything between as little as 1,000 m2 and as much as 25,000m2 in order to build.

Buying or building a property inland is no cheaper than doing so on the coast. The only difference is that the same amount of money inland buys much more land and thus more privacy.
